Husky Tracksters Return from Cheney with Top Marks

SEATTLE-- The return trip to Cheney, Wash., for the Jerry Martin Invitational proved eventful for the Washington men's and women's track teams as several individuals reached qualifying marks for post-season meets.

Headlining the group of qualifiers was senior sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.), the Washington school record holder in the 100, 200 and 400m. Hooker claimed a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 55m dash, recording a time of 6.12 in the finals of the event.

Along with Hooker's win, red-shirt freshman Dustin Duke (Spokane, Wash.) won the mile run and the members of the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams also brought home top placings. Senior Sean Steele (Orting, Wash.) earned a runner-up nod in the high jump.

Reaching Mountain Pacific Conference qualifying marks on the men's side were freshman Matt Hennessy (55m dash), senior Josh Renz (55m HH), freshman Jesse Giordano (55m HH), freshman Marc James (55m HH), Steele (high jump), and red-shirt sophomore Kevin deSouza (long jump).

On the women's side, the 4x400 relay team claimed the top spot while sophomore Tesha Moore (Everett, Wash.) grabbed second in the 400m run. The 4x800m relay team also earned the runner-up position.

Earning Mountain Pacific qualifying marks on the women's side were: sophomore Jamara Smith (55m dash and long jump), junior Shavon Hawkins (55m dash and 55m HH), senior Chelsie Pentz (55m dash), Moore (400m run), junior Kelsey Sheppard (55m HH), junior Zee Ogarro (55m HH)

Washington's next team competition will be Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Air Force Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo. A select group of athletes with compete next Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Penn State meet in State College, Penn.

Senior sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker, who was recently named the No. 8 400m runner in the United States by Track & Field News, received an automatic bid to the NCAAs recording a time of 6.12 in the 55m dash at the Jerry Martin Invitational Saturday. Hooker won the 55m title at the 1998 NCAA Indoor meet. This year's NCAAs are set for March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
