Camden, N.J. - The Washington men's rowing team competes at its national championships this weekend, the 98th annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta, June 1-3 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Heat racing begins Thursday, followed by semi-finals Friday and grande finals Saturday. Below is the draw for the first day of heat racing Thursday. The I varsity eight competes for the Varsity Challenge Cup, the silver cup first presented in 1989. Washington has won the cup 11 times, dating back to 1923, and most recently in 1997. The junior varsity competes for the Kennedy Challenge Cup, originally presented in 1899. The Huskies have won the cup 10 times, most recently in 1997. The freshman men race for the Steward's Cup, begun in 1900. Washington won the cup in 1997, completing a Husky sweep of all three premier races. It was the 10th Steward Cup victory for UW and the first since 1969. Prior to the sweep in 1997, it was 50 years ago that Washington last swept all three races.

Last Year: At the 1999 IRA, the varsity eight finished third, behind California and Princeton. The junior varsity earned a silver medal, behind California. The freshmen were fourth, behind Brown, Cal and Princeton.

Been There, Done That: Washington's I Varsity Eight holds three rowers who have earned a national championship during their UW career: stroke Eric Funk, three seat Whit Hammond and two seat Mike Chait. All three were on the freshman crew that won a gold medal in the Steward's Cup in 1997. They moved into the varsity eight as sophomores and finished second in 1998, followed by a third place finish in 1999.

Back Home: Washington's varsity eight has a slight east coast flavor this year. Coxswain Tim Lewis, of Buffalo, NY, is new to the Huskies this year after transferring from Temple. He followed former teammate John Clark, in seven, who transferred to UW last season. Also new this year is five seat Tim Brislin, of Harvey's Lake, Pa., who transferred from Villanova. Stroke Eric Funk is from Margate, N.J.
