PORTLAND, Ore. -- The No. 25 Washington baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep and an eight-game season sweep of Portland State Sunday at Civic Stadium, beating the Vikings 8-7.
The win, the Huskies' 19th straight over PSU, sets up a Pac-10 North showdown next weekend in Seattle when Washington plays host to Oregon State in a four-game series. If Oregon State won Sunday's game vs.Washington State, a 3-1 or 4-0 series win by either side would give that team the Pac-10 North title. A 2-2 split would mean a tie, and with every tie-breaker even, the right to host the Pac-10 Championship would come down to a coin flip.
Washington is 29-13 on the year, 14-6 in the division. Portland State fell to 13-29, 1-19.
Sunday, the Huskies broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth when, with two outs, Chris Magruder, Nick Stefonick and Kevin Miller connected on consecutive doubles to score two runs.
Miller went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs on the day. For the series, Miller went 11-for-17 with seven runs and seven RBI. Magruder, celebrating his 21st birthday, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Reliever Wayne Lee (1-0) picked up the victory, fanning eight in four and two-thirds innings. PSU starter Adam Flohr (4-8) worked seven and one-third innings, allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs, for the loss.
Magruder finished the series having reached base in 19 of 21 plate appearances. For the four-game series, the junior All-American was 10-for-12 with seven walks and was hit by a pitch twice. The Huskies' all-time runs leader scored 10 runs.
The Huskies return to Seattle for the final 10 games of the regular season. Tuesday, Washington hosts St. Martin's before taking on the Beavers this weekend at Husky Ballpark.
