UW's Carlsen Named Pac-10 North Pitcher of the Week Washington freshman Jeff Carlsen has been named the Pac-10 Northern Division Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced late yesterday.
Carlsen, a 6-foot-6 righty from Poulsbo, Wash., threw nine-inning, one-hit shutout over Washington State last Saturday, beating the Cougars, 8-0. Carlsen had a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings before surrendering a single. He finished the game having allowed four walks while striking out six.
It was the first complete game of Carlsen's career and the first shutout by a Husky pitcher since 1995. It was also the first one-hitter thrown by a UW pitcher since Derek Carpenter threw a seven-inning one-hitter in 1994.
Oregon State catcher Ben Bertrand was named the division's player of the week. The first-place Huskies and second-place Beavers square off this weekend in a four-game series in Corvallis.
