SEATTLE, Wash. -- Fred Honebein has been hired as the Washington men's freshman crew coach, Husky director of athletics Barbara Hedges announced. Honebein replaces John Parker, who left to pursue graduate studies.

Honebein spent the past year as freshman coach for the California women's rowing program. His 1998 novice eight crew placed second, behind Washington, at the San Diego Crew Classic and Pacific-10 Conference Championships. The Pac-10 finish was the Bears' best showing by a frosh crew in 10 years.

As a rower, Honebein was captain of the United States Olympic men's eight-oared crew from 1993 to 1996 and led his boat to a fifth-place finish at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was a part of crews that won a gold medal at the 1994 World Championships and bronze medals at the 1993 and 1995 championships. Honebein was the US Rowing Athlete of the Year in 1995.

He was a member of the US National Team from 1992 through 1996 and during that time won numerous regattas throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. His crews twice won the Grand Challenge Cup, in 1994 and 95, at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.

Honebein began his collegiate rowing career at Orange Coast College, where his frosh crew won the San Diego Crew Classic in 1987 and his junior varsity boat won in 1988. He rowed on the varsity eight at California from 1989-90.

"I am excited to begin my tenure at Washington," said Honebein. "This is a great opportunity to work with Bob Ernst and Jan Harville, who are both highly successful coaches. I look forward to learning as much as possible as well as contributing to an already outstanding program at Washington."

"We are lucky to have a person with Freds athletic background and character join our program," added Ernst. "His knowledge and experience will be a significant contribution to the tradition of outstanding freshman crews at Washington."

A native of San Francisco, Honebein graduated from California in 1991 with a degree in Eastern European history.
