June 5, 2000

Washington right-handed pitcher Matt Massingale was selected by the Florida Marlins Monday in the first day of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft. Massingale was selected with the first pick of the eighth round with the 221st overall selection.

Massingale, from Kennewick, Wash. (Kennewick High), just completed his junior season for the Huskies. After spending the first two years of his career as a reliever, he joined the starting rotation in 2000. He finished the year with a 6-7 record and a 6.43 earned run average. He led the team in innings pitched (99.1), strikeouts (92), starts (15) and complete games (6), while also sharing the team lead in wins.

Last season, Massingale served as the Huskies' closer and tied for the Pac-10 lead in saves with eight. In each of his first two seasons at UW, he led the team in appearances. Massingale was undrafted out of high school, where he helped lead the Lions to a second-place state finish as a senior in 1997.

Massingale was the only current Husky selected on the first day of the draft. Twenty of the draft's 50 rounds were completed today.
