Junior Bryan Williamson turned in his longest pitching outing of the season to lead 22nd-ranked Washington to a 12-5 win over Oregon State. The win gives the Huskies (33-14 overall, 17-7 Pac-10) their third consecutive Pac-10 North title and earns them the right to host the Southern Division champion in the Pac-10 Championship Series May 14-16.
Next weekend, Southern Division leader and No. 1-ranked Stanford plays a three-game series against second-place USC needing to beat the Trojans only once to set up a repeat of last year's Pac-10 series.
Williamson (2-0) worked six three-hit innings for the win Sunday. The 6-foot-6 righty from Kennewick underwent off-season shoulder surgery and had not worked more than five innings this year while trying to completely recover. Sunday, he allowed two runs, three walks, struck out three and left the game with a 12-2 lead.
The top of the Husky order did most of the damage offensively. Right fielder Nick Stefonick went 4-for-4 with a triples, two steals and four RBI. Kevin Miller drove in three runs with two hits and leadoff man Chris Magruder reached base four times and scored four runs. Sophomore Ed Erickson drove in two runs and belted his 10th homer of the season.
The Huskies scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed. OSU starter B.R. Cook (1-3) hit Magruder to lead off the game, then walked Stefonick. After they both stole a base to move to second and third, Miller drove them both home with a single. Cook surrendered six runs on five hits in three and two-thirds innings.
The Beavers (32-14-1, 15-9) will close out the season next weekend with a three-game series against UCLA, then wait to see if their strong out-of-conference schedule will earn a regional berth.
The Huskies take on Portland Tuesday and Wednesday at Husky Ballpark before closing out the regular season next weekend at home with a three-game series vs. California.
