PULLMAN -- The No. 20 Washington baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 tie and beat Washington State, 11-7, Sunday at Bailey Field. With the win, the Huskies salvaged a four-game series split and leap-frogged the Cougars into second place in the Pac-10 North.
After beginning as a slugfest, the game settled into a pitchers' duel. Husky reliever Ken Ferguson (1-0) threw the final five and one-third innings of the game to earn the win. The sophomore from Issaquah allowed only two base hits and struck out five.
Washington improved to 24-13 on the season and 10-6 in the Pac-10 North. Washington State fell to 19-17 overalland 9-6 in the league.Oregon State, in first place, is 11-4 in Pac-10 North play.
The Huskies took the lead with one out in the ninth when pinch hitter Kevin Ticen's single to left field scored Kyle Woods from second base. A two-run double by Nick Stefonick plated two more and Stefonick eventually scored on a wild pitch.
WSU reliever Reggie Rivard (0-2) suffered the loss in one and one-third innings of work.
The Huskies jumped on WSU starter Dave Wheeler in the first, scoring five runs, thanks to doubles from Nick Stefonick and Ryan Lentz, a Kevin Miller sacrifice fly, a Kyle Woods single and a error by WSU first baseman Casey Kelley.
Washington had leads of 6-1 and 7-3, but the Cougars came back in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the gameat 7-7. The big hit of the inning, which featured three walks and a wild pitch, was a two-run homer by Jeff Scherer, his seventh of the season and fourth homer against Washington.
The Huskies return to Seattle to face Puget Sound on Wednesday before travelling to play Portland State in a four-game Pac-10 North series next weekend.
