SEATTLE, WA -- The Utah women's gymnastics team demonstrated why it is the second-ranked team in the country by defeating 17th-ranked Washington 196.225 to 195.225 in Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The Utes raised their record to 5-1 despite their top gymnast, freshman Shannon Bowles, being limited to one event due to a foot injury.
Despite the loss, Washington (7-3) had several outstanding performances. Washington's team score was its highest of the season and the Huskies set the school record on floor exercise with a score of 49.350. Washington's team scores on vault (49.175) and uneven bars (48.900) were also season highs. The Huskies set or tied 17 individual season best scores during the meet.
Washington senior Klara Kudilkova led the Husky effort by recording a career high in the all-around with a score of 39.625 which is the second-best performance by a Husky gymnast. Kudilkova tied her career best performance on balance beam (9.850), floor exercise (9.950) and uneven bars (9.850). Kudilkova's scores on floor and vault allowed her to win those individual events.
Several falls on balance beam cost the Huskies any chance of upsetting Utah. Angie Leonard led the Utes' effort by recording a season high in the all-around with a score of 39.325. Leonard won the bars competition with a 9.900. Utah's other individual win came on balance beam where Traci Sommer recorded the meet's top score with a 9.950.
Washington will host defending NCAA champion UCLA next Friday at 7 p.m. in Hec Edmundson Pavilion.Women's Collegiate Gymnastics
