SAN DIEGO (AP) - Washington has been invited to play in the Culligan Holiday Bowl on Dec. 29 as runner-up in the Pac-10 Conference.
The Huskies were 7-4 overall under first-year coach Rick Neuheisel.
Washington and Oregon tied for second in the conference with 6-2 records, giving bowl officials the option of selecting either team. Washington defeated Oregon 34-20 last month.
"It was very difficult to choose between the Huskies and the Ducks," bowl president John Rebelo said Saturday night. "Both schools offered compelling arguments for the bowl to select them. After serious discussions weighing many factors, the decision was made by the team selection committee to invite the Washington Huskies."
The Holiday Bowl matches the Pac-10 runner-up with the third place team from the Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 representative will be announced after the conference title game on Dec. 4.
Neuheisel is only the second coach to lead two schools to the Holiday Bowl, having guided Colorado to a 33-21 victory over the Huskies in 1996. John Cooper brought Arizona State in 1985 and Ohio State in 1993.
