CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 15-ranked Washington baseball team dropped out of first place in the Pac-10 North Sunday, falling to Oregon State 4-2, at Coleman Field.

OSU starter Chris Pine (4-2) threw seven shutout innings for the victory, fanning 12 batters. Pine allowed only two hits, but walked eight, stranding at least one Husky runner in every innings. UW freshman Jeff Carlsen (5-2) surrendered five hits and four runs in 6.2 innings for the loss.

With the victory, the Beavers (21-7-1 overall, 6-2 in the Pac-10 North) took over first place, winning their ninth straight game. The Huskies fell to 20-10 overall, 6-3 in the Pac-10.

The Beavers drew first blood in the game in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Carlsen struck out Ben Bertrand, the Beavers' top hitter, but then gave up a two-run single to designated hitter Joe Gerber. In the fourth, Drew Hedges was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a single and scored on a Brian Duerr groundout.

Duerr drove in his second run of the game in the sixth when his sacrifice fly scored Matt Bailie from third base to make the score 4-0.

Washington didn't score its first run until the eighth inning. With reliever Mike Boire pitching, Ryan Bundy hit a two-out double to the wall in right field. Second baseman Chris Whitemarsh laid down a bunt. Whitemarsh beat out the bunt, but Boire slipped as he threw to first base and the throw went into right field, allowing Bundy to score.

In the top of the ninth, the Huskies made it 4-2 and had the go-ahead run at the plate in Kyle Woods. But Woods flied out to the track in right field to end the game.

The Beavers and Huskies will continue the four-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
