SEATTLE, Wash. - The 23rd-ranked Washington baseball team rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to come back and hand California a 6-4 defeat Saturday at Husky Ballpark in the second-game of a three-game non-conference series.

Leading 4-3, Cal starter Jon Shirley walked the leadoff man to begin the bottom of the eighth and gave way to reliever Jon Cuccias. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner up, left fielder Jim Na singled to tie the game at 4-4. A single and a hit batter loaded the bases for right fielder Nick Stefonick.

Stefonick bounced into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but Cal second baseman Xavier Nady's throw to first was off course, allowing two runs to score. Cal coach Bob Milano was ejected arguing that Chris Magruder had slid into second base illegally, causing Nady's errant throw.

Wayne Lee pitched a perfect ninth, fanning the last two batters, to pick up his first career save. Husky reliever Matt Massingale (6-1) did the same in the top of the eighth to earn the win. Cuccias fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Both starting pitchers had good outings. Shirley allowed four runs on seven hits while fanning six. Husky freshman Jeff Carlsen also threw seven innings, allowign four runs on nine hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

Magruder went 3-for-4, scored two runs and stole his 30th base to lead Washington. Stefonick had two hits and three RBI. Shortstop Brian Oliver led the Bears (22-31) with two hits, a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Cal center fielder Juan Hernandez had two hits and two RBI.

In the Southern Division, Stanford beat USC 4-2 to wrap up the division title. The No. 1-ranked Cardinal will travel to Husky Ballpark next week for the Pac-10 Championship Series.

The Huskies and Bears complete the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. The game can be heard live on KRPM AM-1090.
