PORTLAND, Ore.--The fourth-ranked Washington softball team used 24 hits and turned three double plays to complete its second sweep of Portland State on Friday, winning 8-0 and 5-3 in Portland. The Huskies improve to 41-9 on the season and will play a doubleheader at Oregon State on Saturday.

Washington exploded for five runs off five hits in the opening frame of the first game. Sophomore Rosie Leutzinger and freshman Kelly Hauxhurst singled to set up freshman Kim DePauls two-RBI double to begin the game. Junior Becky Newbry tripled to send DePaul home before sophomore Erin Helgeland walked and stole second. Freshman Denia Pisia then singled Helgeland home to end the scoring barrage.

The Husky bats yielding four hits but no runs over the next four innings, but in the sixth frame UW scored a run with no hits. Sophomore Jamie Graves reached first on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving to third by virtue of sophomore Melissa Downs shot. Sophomore pinch hitter Amber Lunzer landed on first on an error that also sent Graves home.

In the seventh, senior Eve Gaw was hit by a pitch and then pinch run for by sophomore Amber Engen. Newbry walked before sophomore Angela Bennetts single loaded the bases. Downs singled and reached second on an error that helped Newbry put the final score on the board.

Gaw (7-1) began the game and allowed just one hit in five innings before Graves relieved her in the sixth to face just six batters. Gaw struck out six and Graves added four Ks of her own.

The nightcap began quite differently, with Portland State scoring two runs in the first inning off three hits. Washington answered with a run in the second when Helgeland doubled, stole third and then stole home while Leutzinger was stealing second after getting walked.

UW added two more in the third, the first off Gaws sixth home run of the season. Newbry singled to left field and stole second and third before Helgelands single sent Newbry home. In the fifth frame, sophomore Jennifer Spediacci and Helgeland both singled and scored off an overthrown ball to first.

The Vikings scored again in the seventh, but it wasnt enough to overtake the Huskies. Spediacci pitched her 16th complete game of the year and improved to 18-5.
