SEATTLE, Wash. - Three Husky freshmen scored in double-digits Saturday, including the first-career double-double for newcomer Emily Autrey, as the Washington women dropped their exhibition finale 86-83 to the National Women's Basketball League Elite team at Kirkland's Lake Washington High School.
In addition to Autrey's 12 points and 14 rebounds, classmate Loree Payne added 15 points, and fellow frosh Kellie O'Neill contributed 12 of her own. Husky junior Megan Franza led all scorers with 23 points including five three-pointers, one shy of her career-high.
Kansas City, Mo. native Danielle Shareef led the NWBL Elite with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Washington took its first lead since the opening minutes on an Autrey lay-in with 16:49 remaining in the second half. The teams then swapped the lead six times in the next 15 minutes, with the Huskies maintaining a slim 83-80 advantage with :58 left in the game. Elite guard Stephanie Jones, however, made three of her six total steals in the game's final minute, and helped convert each into two points to give the NWBL an 86-83 lead. A last-second three-point attempt by Payne bounced off the rim and fell harmlessly to the floor.
"This was an excellent test for us, and gave us a taste of what we'll see as we get into our Division I schedule," said fourth-year Husky head coach June Daugherty. "I like the fact that as a team, we were down eight or nine [points], and were able to come back and take the lead. We didn't get the job done defensively, and that was the big thing that hurt us."
With the exhibition season complete, the Huskies now set their sights on the regular season home opener, Nov. 23 versus BYU at Mercer Arena.
