TUCSON, Ariz.--On a day that was a lesson in contrasts, Washington and Arizona split a Pac-10 doubleheader in Tucson on Sunday in which the teams took turns at totally dominating the other. The Huskies came out on fire and clobbered UA, 9-0, in five innings. It was the first time the Wildcats have been run-ruled at least since 1986, but the Wildcats returned the favor in the nightcap, winning 10-0.

Senior Eve Gaw blasted two home runs and singled off the left center wall for a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI in the opener. Sophomore Rosie Leutzinger led off with a single in the first and was sacrificed to second by freshman Kelly Hauxhurst. Gaw then sent her second pitch over the left field fence to put the Huskies up 2-0 after one inning.

UW was quiet in the second but returned in the third to score three runs on four hits. Leutzinger again singled to start of the hitting spree. Freshman Kim DePaul was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Gaws single. DePaul then scored off an error by the pitcher and Gaw landed on third before pinch runner Angela Bennett crossed the plate off junior Becky Newbrys single to right field.

The fourth frame was even more productive for the Dawgs, collecting four runs on four hits. Senior Leah Francis hit a shot to left field and Hauxhurst walked before DePaul doubled to send Francis home. Gaw then knocked in three runs off her second homer to end the scoring.

Sophomore Jamie Graves held the Wildcats at bay, allowing only five hits, before sophomore Jennifer Spediacci entered the game with one out remaining and struck out the final batter.

The second game was as futile as the first was fruitful. Washington managed only three hits after collecting 11 in the opener and made four errors in the field.
