SEATTLE, - The 20th-ranked Washington baseball team finished up a four-game Pac-10 North series sweep of Portland State Sunday, beating the Vikings, 8-2, at Husky Ballpark.

The Huskies (12-4 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-10) used strong defense and timely pitching to win what was a close contest through much of the game. Freshman starter John Gillespie (1-1) picked up his first career win. The Lake Washington HS grad threw five innings, allowing only one run on three hits. PSU starter Tony Blackhurst (2-2) worked four and one-third innings in the loss as his team fell to 6-12, 0-4. It was the Huskies' 15th straight win over Portland State.

Reliever Bryan Williamson used a double play to get out of a jam in the seventh, when the score was 4-1. In the eighth, with the score 6-1, junior Wayne Lee came in with the bases loaded and no out, and got a 1-2-3 double play and a strikeout to get out of it without allowing a run.

Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Huskies took the lead for good when first baseman Ed Erickson blasted a two-run homer, his first of the season.

Third baseman Ryan Lentz went 2-for-5 with three RBI and hit his fourth homer of the year. Nick Stefonick doubled and tripled in four at bats and catcher Ryan Bundy went 3-for-4 with three singles for Washington. DH Russ Riehl led PSU with two hits, and Rick Southall, who hit four home runs in Saturday's doubleheader, went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.

The Huskies take the week off for finals before departing on Friday for Stanford, where they'll give the No. 1-ranked Cardinal a rematch of last season's Pac-10 Championship Series, which Washington won, two games to one. The series begins Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and continues through Monday.
