ST. GEORGE, Utah - The 21st-ranked Washington baseball team jumped to a 12-1 lead and then hung on beat beat Brigham Young, 14-13, Thursday night in their season opener at the Dixie Tournament in St. George, Utah.
The Huskies got out to an early lead in the first inning when senior DH Pete Orgill blasted a three-run double to the wall in center field, giving the UW a 3-0 lead. The Huskies extended the leadwith four runs in the second inning. Senior third baseman Kevin Ticen led off with a solo homer and, with two on and two out, junior Ed Erickson homered to right field to make it 7-0 and chase BYU starter Rusty Gray.
The Cougars scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, closing the gap to one run before sophomore Matt Massingale closed it out, earning a save.
Husky starter Jeff Heaverlo fanned six, but was only able to work four and one-third innings in the 30-degree temperatures. The preseason All-America gave up three earned runs on five hits. Sophomore reliever Daniel Jahn worked one and two-thirds for the win, allowing one hit and fanning two.
Gray (1-1) took the loss for BYU, which fell to 3-2 on the year. David Jensen hit a two-run double and a solo homer for the Cougars.
Orgill finished the day with four RBI on 2-for-3 hitting. Erickson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and both Nick Stefonick and Greg Brooks had two RBI for the Huskies.
The Huskies continue the season-opening weekend Friday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on Southern Utah.
