Husky Men's Cross Country Team Places Third; UW Women Finish Fourth at Michigan Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Washington men's cross country team placed third while sophomores Jennifer Smith and Kara Syrdal finished third and fourth, respectively, for the fourth-place Husky women during the Wolverine Interregional meet Sunday at the Michigan Golf Course.

Seventh-ranked Michigan placed three runners in the top-four to win the men's competition with 34 points. Michigan's John Mortimer won the 8,000-meter title for the second straight season, posting a time of 24-minutes, 53-seconds.

The Washington men totaled 106 points, placing third behind the 71-point total of 23rd-ranked James Madison. Senior Christian Belz paced the Huskies, placing ninth in 25:37 during his 1998 season debut.

Host Michigan also won the women's team title in a field loaded with nationally-ranked teams. The third-ranked Wolverines, with a winning score of 71, were followed by No. 10 Georgetown's 87-point tally. Ninth-ranked Wake Forest posted a third-place score of 101 to edge the 13th-ranked Washington women by one point. The Huskies scored 102 points followed by No. 14 William & Mary with 135.

Notre Dame's JoAnna Deeter covered the women's 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 17:37. Janelle Kraus of Wake Forest was the runner-up in 17:42, followed by Smith (17:43) and Syrdal (17:52). A product of Spokane's Ferris High School, Smith transferred to Washington after a brilliant freshman season at Colorado where she earned All-America honors. Syrdal is a graduate of Seattle's Shorecrest High School.

The Michigan race was the final regular-season meet for the Husky cross country teams which begin postseason competition, Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Pacific-10 Conference championships in Eugene, Ore.
