SEATTLE - On senior weekend, it was a senior that ended game two and clinched the final Pac-12 series of the season for the Huskies over Cal on Friday night, 9-8, in nine innings. Senior catcher Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) hit a solo home run in the ninth to lead No. 12/11 Washington (38-14, 16-7) to the victory over No. 17/20 Cal (35-17, 9-14).
Washington had a 7-1 lead after two innings but two runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth for Cal put the Golden Bears back in the game. Each team scored in the seventh to send the game to extras tied at 8-8.
It was a wild game that went nearly three hours live on the Pac-12 Networks. Eight of nine Husky starters had at least one hit in the game.
Junior Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got the win. She earned the start and allowed six runs on six hits. She was pulled in a crazy sixth inning after Cal had two on and just one out but fellow junior Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) struggled, walking in two runs and allowing a single and Walker returned to the circle. Walker walked in the tying run but got the No. 4 hitter to strikeout and popped up the next batter to end the inning.
Cal went up 8-7 in the seventh with a solo home run by Victoria Jones to deep left field.
Down to their last out against Jolene Henderson in the bottom of the inning, junior Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) reached base on a fielding error.
Freshman Jennie McNeil (Simi Valley, Calif.) singled to center and junior Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) singled to left as Jones scored from second to send the game to extras.
Vanessa Alvarez took over in relief for Cal in the eighth; she was the fourth pitcher of the evening for the Golden Bears. Wright was the leadoff hitter for the Huskies in the ninth, hitting her fifth home run of the season to left field for the game-winner.
Inglesby drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right as junior Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) scored. Sophomore Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) drove a ball way over the left field wall for a three-run home run in the first, her second home run in as many days.
Suguro scored on a single by Fagaly in the second and a single by Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) drove in two more for a 7-1 lead.
Cal got on the board in the second as Britt Vonk scored on a single by Ashley Decker.
In the fourth, a two run home run by Victoria Jones to left after a walk to Vonk cut Washington's lead to 7-3.
Game three is at 3 p.m. Saturday and is senior day. Washington will honor seniors Shawna Wright, Jerrin Fa'asua and Lindsay Monk after the game.
