SAN DIEGO - On day one of the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State, the No. 18/16 Huskies (5-3) earned a split, defeated Notre Dame, 5-2, and falling to No. 24/22 Kentucky, 3-2.
Game One - No. 18/16 Washington 5, Notre Dame 2
Junior Bryana Walker improved to 3-1 on the year with the complete game victory over Notre Dame (2-3), allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
The Huskies never trailed in the game, going up 2-1 after three innings and adding two in the seventh before the Irish got one back in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) had three of the 11 Washington hits and senior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) added two.
In the third, Dani Braun (Chehalis, Wash.) and junior Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.).
Notre Dame got on the board in the bottom of the inning as the designated home team, scoring a running from third on a Husky error.
Washington went back up by two in the fourth inning as Souza came home on a Hayward single.
Extending the lead in their half of the seventh, the Huskies got two more on an Irish throwing error and a Souza single.
The Irish added one in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to rally from a four-run deficit. An infield single by Megan Sorlie drove in the final run of the game.
Laura Winter took the loss for the Irish, falling to 0-3 on the season.
Game Two - No. 24/22 Kentucky 3, No. 18/16 Washington 2
Kentucky (7-2) went up 3-0 after four-and-a-half innings and that's all they would need to hand the Huskies their second loss to a top 25 team on the season.
Sophomore Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start in the circle (1-1) allowing three runs on five hits in 4.0. Inglesby pitched 3.0 innings of relief allowing just two hits and two walks.
In the top of the first, Kentucky went up 2-0 with a two-run home run by Lauren Cumbess. The Wildcats got their third run of the game in the fifth after a bunt single, stolen base and then single up the middle.
The Huskies scored once each in the fifth and the six to cut the lead to one and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning.
Braun scored the first Husky run as a pinch runner on a single by Hayward. A Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in the final Husky run, Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) from third.
Kelsey Nunley got the win for Kentucky in the circle, improving to 5-0. She allowed one run, unearned, in 6.0 innings.
