VARESE, Italy –The University of Washington rowing team had 14 male Huskies and two female Dawgs as well as newly appointed assistant coach Matt Rung competing at the Under-23 World Championships in Varese, Italy over the last three days, taking on the highest levels of competition from around the world.

The obvious highlight from the weekend for a Husky athlete came when recent graduate Michael Thornton claimed the gold medal for Team Canada in the men’s 4+ competition. Five other Dawgs also earned hardware in Italy; Stuart Sim and Henry Meek took home silver for Australia in the men’s 8+ and Alexander Perkins finished in third for bronze with the American 8+.

Ruth Whyman, recently graduated, and returning boatmate Fiona Gammond rounded out the top finishing Huskies when they claimed a silver medal for the Great Britain team in the women’s 8+.

Those watching from Conibear Shellhouse could not have been more proud of the way the athletes raced on the world stage.

"We have the privilege to coach such dedicated young men that row all year round to be the best at what they do in the world,” head men’s coach Michael Callahan said.

“The team decided to focus on the U23 Worlds and Senior Worlds instead of Henley this summer.  It's fantastic to see so many students earning spots on their national teams and developing as better oarsmen.  I think it also shows that the program is helping our students reach their goals as dreams.  They raced the best in the world this summer at their age level and preformed very well. Graduating senior Michael Thornton ('14) led the way with a gold medal in the men's 4+.  It shows that our seniors lead the way at Washington. Super proud of what he accomplished and his GRIT. I think everyone in the Conibear Shellhouse knows he deserved this one."
