Matt Rung enters his second season as First Assistant and Recruiting Coordinator for Washington Men's Rowing.  In his first season at Washington, he led the Freshman Eight to a National Championship at the 2015 IRA Championships. In June 2015, Washington men’s crew made history by winning their fifth straight and 18th overall IRA National Championship and ninth straight Ten Eyck trophy (team points title), an achievement unseen in collegiate rowing.

At his alma mater, Rung served two seasons as the First Assistant Coach for Men's Lightweight Crew at Cornell University.  During his tenure, the Big Red captured the 2014 Jope Cup: team points trophy and the Varsity Eight won the 2014 Eastern Sprints and IRA Championships, after an undefeated regular season, an accomplishment not seen in decades at Cornell.  In those two years, Rung also guided the frosh eights to two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2013 and 2014 Eastern Sprints Championships.

​Prior to his time at Cornell, Rung was the Freshman Assistant for the Huskies during the 2011-2012 season, and was the coach of the Men's Open 4+, which won gold and set the course record at the 2012 IRA Regatta.  Over the summer, Rung acted as the head coach of the USRowing Pairs Development Camp, which produced a gold medal in the Men's Senior 4+ and a bronze in the Men's Intermediate 4+ at the USRowing Club Nationals Regatta.  At the end of his first year with Washington, Rung led a crew of Washington Alumni to the Famous International Universities Regatta in The People's Republic of China, where the Huskies won every event.     

Also, during the 2010-2011 season, he was the Varsity Assistant and Lifting Coach for Men's Rowing at Princeton University.

In addition to his collegiate work, Rung assisted the Senior Men’s squad at World Cup III in the summer of 2013, and was an assistant coach for the U23 Women’s National Team in 2014.​

Rung graduated from Cornell University, where he rowed on Varsity Lightweight Crew for four years, won a National Championship at the IRA, and was elected lightweight captain during his senior year in 2009-2010.

He attended high school at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, NY where he also rowed four years and was team captain.  During the summers, he rowed with the West Side Rowing Club.
