SEATTLEGoldenGardens were more gray this morning, but the rain held off to let the Husky sand volleyball team play in a true match format for the first time in front of about a hundred devoted fans. Washington played five matches in tough, windy conditions, making the most of a chance to show their progress in the newest Husky sport.

Washington has been practicing for about the past two months, with a couple weeks off for finals and spring break. The Huskies are now a week out from their first ever competition, which will be in Portland next Saturday, April 12, against Oregon, BoiseState, and potentially PortlandState as well.

Head Coach Keegan Cook was pleased with how the Huskies dealt with the wind after some early struggles.

“I feel good about the games today; we really appreciate everyone who came out to watch and support us,” said Cook. “The conditions were really tough, a lot tougher than what we’ve been experiencing most days, but you can have days like this where the wind is ripping and you have to learn how to deal with it and I thought they did a nice job of that by the end.”

Two courts were set up, with two matches going on at once to start the day. In the first match to finish, Carly DeHoog and Justice Magraw got a win over Lianna Sybeldon and Jade Finau by the score of 21-17, 21-13. A few minutes later, Kaleigh Nelson and Cassie Strickland earned a 21-10, 21-9 win over Katy Beals and Kim Condie.

The next round featured Krista Vansant and Condie against Magraw and DeHoog, with Vansant and Condie getting the win, 21-13, 21-16. On the adjacent court, Beals teamed with Melanie Wade for a 22-20, 21-14 win over Finau and Sybeldon.

The last match pitted the Nelson-Strickland combo against Vansant and Wade. Nelson and Strickland completed a 2-0 day with a 21-14, 21-12 victory.
