CHONBURI, Thailand – Washington junior Cheng-Tsung Pan has qualified for the British Open by tying for second at the Open Qualifying Series – Thailand Event at the Amata Spring Country Club. Pan finished the 36-hole event at 4-under par to join three others in advancing to Royal Liverpool.

Pan will advance to his third major championship, a year after finishing tied for 45th at the U.S. Open at Merion. He also competed in the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional. This year the British Open will be played for the 143rd time, the of the oldest championship in golf.

“I’m still in a state of shock but at the same time I’m really happy with how I have played considering how tough this qualifier has been,” said Pan.

“Playing in The Open Championship has always been a dream of mine. The conditions are going to be very different from the US at Royal Liverpool but I guess that’s what golf is all about. You have got to learn to play and compete under different conditions and hopefully I can do well again in July.”

Pan played a steady 36 holes, shooting two rounds of 2-under 70. He opened with a bogey-free round, birdying 15 and 16 to finish the first round tied for fifth. Pan then made four bogeys and two bogeys in the final round to climb the leaderboard into a tie for second. He birdied 15 for a second-straight day, before finishing with three-straight pars to earn a spot at the British Open.

The top four at the Thailand qualifier earned the automatic spots at Liverpool. Hiroshi Iwata of Japan earned medalist honors and the first qualifying spot, while China’s Ashun Wu tied with Pan in second place to also earn an automatic spot. There was a tie for fourth place, meaning a playoff was needed to decide the final spot. Tohinobu Tsukada of Japan emerged from that group to earn his trip to The Open.

The British Open will be played July 17-20 at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.
