SEATTLE – On Monday night, the University of Washington gymnastics team competed in their annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet, using a head-to-head format for the second time. Between the eight celebrity judges there were two ties, solved by rock-paper-scissor contests, which ultimately decided the meet for the Gold team, which won 7-6.
“We had the meet earlier this year than we have in the past,” said head coach Joanne Bowers. “The girls have been working very hard this fall, and it is looking like we are going to be in great shape come January. It was really important for us to have the girls practice the flow of how meets are going to run this year, especially with the six new freshmen. But the best part of having it this early for us was that a lot of the girls will be able to go home for Thanksgiving now and relax. For a lot of them this is the first time they’ll be home since summer.”
This contest ended up being a thriller with a tie on beam between Purple team member and senior Aliza Vaccher and freshman Janae Janik for Gold. The head-to-head pair duked it out in a best-of-three rock-paper-scissors game on top of the beam. Vaccher won the point for Purple, which started their comeback. Purple had been down 6-3 before the tiebreaker.
On the final event, floor, Purple did their best to overcome the dominant Gold performance and took both points from the first two match-ups, tying everything up at 6-6.
Vaccher was again on the line for Purple, tying with sophomore Allison Northey. This time, though, the Gold representative pulled out the tie-breaking point and the overall team victory.
The meet was a great time for all, in no small part thanks to the celebrity judges: former GymDawgs Lauren Rogers and Paige Bixler, Associate Athletic Director for Student Development Kim Durand, head men’s soccer coach Jamie Clark, head men’s golf coach Matt Thurmond and his daughter, lead team physician Dr. John O’Kane and former principal dancer in the Pacific Northwest Ballet Jordan Pacitti.
The GymDawgs will start official competition on Jan. 13 at 7:00 pm in Alaska Airlines Arena against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. For more information on purchasing tickets, click here.
