STANFORD, Calif. – Washington played another strong round at the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice. The Dawgs shot even par for a two-day total of 2-under 566 to sit in third place, trailing USC and UCLA.

Washington sits 20 strokes out of the lead after torrid second rounds by both the Trojans and Bruins. USC fired a round of 12-under 272 and is at 20-under for the tournament. UCLA was even better in round two, shooting 16-under, but after a tough first day is at 12-under and eight strokes out of the lead.

The Dawgs are alone in third, two shots clear of host Stanford who is at even par for the weekend. Pepperdine is also in contention at 1-over, before it begins to drop off to sixth-place Oregon.

“It was an OK day for us,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We made a couple mistakes on par five’s and I didn’t think our ball striking was quite as good as yesterday. Still, we battled and even though it wasn’t the prettiest, they figured it out.”

Jennifer Yang led Washington with a second round of 2-under 69. Yang played each side with two birdies and one bogey to climb up the leaderboard. Yang sits in a tie for 12th at 1-under for the weekend, climbing 10 spots after her Saturday round.

The individual lead is currently at 9-under by Sophia Popov of USC. Washington’s top player after two days is Charlotte Thomas who is tied for sixth at 3-under. Thomas followed up her career-best 68 with a round of even-par 71. The sophomore bogeyed the 10th to go to 3-over, but fought back with three birdies and no bogeys over the final eight holes to get back to even on the day.

Also playing well for the Dawgs was SooBin Kim who finished with a round of even par. Kim is tied for 12th with Yang at 1-under after making three birdies and three bogeys on Saturday.

The final scoring golfer on Saturday for the Dawgs was Ying Luo who finished with a round of 2-over 73. Luo is tied for 33rd at 3-over for the tournament.

Kelli Bowers is playing as an individual this weekend, but continues to do well as the senior is tied for 18th on the weekend. Bowers shot a round of 1-over 72 and is at even par for the weekend.

Finally, Cyd Okino rounded out the Husky squad with a round of 4-over 75. Okino is tied for 54th at 7-over for the weekend.

Washington will complete the Stanford Intercollegiate on Sunday with the final round. The Dawgs will be in the last five groups with USC and UCLA.

“We are not conceding anything yet,” said Mulflur. “We need to go out tomorrow and have one of those special rounds that I know our team is capable of.”
