ATLANTA -- Washington wrapped up play at the U.S. Collegiate Championship with another solid round to finish 10th against some of the nation’s elite teams. The Dawgs fired a final round of 5-over 293 at the Lakeside course at the Golf Club of Georgia. For the weekend, Washington was 10-over for a three-day total of 874.

Oklahoma State who held a one-stroke lead coming into the final round, hung to the slimmest of margins to defeat Georgia Tech by a single stroke. The Cowboys finished at 15-under, followed by the Yellow Jackets at 14-under and Wake Forest in third place at 2-under.

Ollie Schneiderjans of Georgia Tech took individual medalist honors at 10-under 206. Trevor Simsby was the top Husky in a tie for 18th at 1-under 215 for the tournament. Simsby led the Huskies on Sunday with a round of 3-under 69. After struggling to a 76 on Friday, Simsby was spectacular over the weekend, playing his final two rounds at 5-under. The Husky Senior punctuated the weekend by eagling the 18th hole on Sunday.

Also under par on Sunday was freshman Corey Pereira who fired a round of 1-under 71. Pereira finished the weekend at even par in a tie for 23rd. Not bad for someone playing in just his third collegiate tournament.

Washington’s other scoring golfers in the final round were Chris Babcock and Gerrit Chambers. Babcock finished with a round of 3-over 75, while Chambers fired a round of 6-over 78. Chambers had entered the day at even par, but fell to a tie for 44th with a three-day total of 6-over 222. Babcock finished in a tie for 50th at 8-over 224.

Finally, Jonathan Sanders played his final round in 7-over 79. Sanders finished the weekend at 10-over 226 to tie for 65th.

The Huskies played the U.S. Collegiate without top player Cheng Tsung-Pan who will begin competition in the Asian-Pacific Amateur on October 24.

Washington’s fall season has just one tournament left, the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle in San Marin, Calif., on November 4-5. The Dawgs will compete with another elite field in the annual tournament hosted by UCLA.
