MOREGA, Calif. – In the first day of action at the ITA Northwest Regionals, the University of Washington Men’s Tennis team advanced three student-athletes to the round of 32 in singles play. The three-day tournament is being held on the campus of St. Mary’s and continues through Sunday.
Max Manthou, a senior from Tacoma who was given a bye in the round of 128, battled Pacific’s Eric Cederwall before taking a 7-5, 6-2 victory. He will now face San Francisco’s Nils Skajaa on Saturday. Also advancing was freshman Gal Hakak (Ra’anana, Israel) junior Emmett Egger (Issaquah, Wash.). Hakak easily defeated Portland State’s Avhinav Mishra 6-1, 6-1, while Egger outlasted Niranjan Ram (Sacramento State), 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Earlier in the day junior Viktor Farkas defeated San Francisco’s Chris Brockstedt, 2-6; 6-4; 7-6 (1), in a tightly contested match to move on to the round of 64 and was joined there by sophomore teammate Rish Raman who defeated Johan Samuelsson (USF) 6-1;6-2. Farkas went on to face nationally-ranked Marek Marksoo of Sacramento State and fell 6-4; 6-4 while Raman was defeated by Cal’s Filip Bergevi, 6-2; 6-4.
Action continues on Saturday with doubles matches getting going at 8:30 a.m. and singles matches starting at 2 p.m.
