2014-15 (Track): Focused on the steeplechase and had a strong redshirt freshman season, qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships for the first time … broke the nine-minute mark in the steeplechase for the first time at the UW-WSU Dual, where he ran 8:59.77 to finish third … at the West Prelim meet in Austin, placed 32nd overall in the field of 48 with a steeplechase run of 9:11.91 … at the Pac-12 Championships, finished 11th in the steeplechase in 9:04.03, and also ran the 5,000-meters, finishing 21st in 14:31.42 … took seventh in the steeple at the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, finishing in 9:12.95 … indoors, ran four times, with a 3,000-meters of 8:28.22 at the Husky Classic, and a mile time of 4:20.08 at the UW Invitational ... earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention ... (Cross Country): Redshirted the fall.
2013-14 (Track): Redshirted the track season ... (Cross Country): Very consistent freshman season in which he scored for the Huskies at every race … ran at NCAA West Regionals, finishing fifth on the team and 73rd overall in 31:23 for 10k … was 43rd at his first Pac-12 Championships, the No. 5 Husky finisher … also capped the scoring at the Wisconsin Invitational, placing 136th overall in the large field … ran at the Bill Dellinger Invite, finishing 29th overall and fifth among Huskies … first collegiate race at the Sundodger, where he finished 14th overall and fourth on the squad.
High School and Personal: Born in Ethiopia, he was adopted by Michelle and Steven Gardner and moved to Spokane at the age of nine, joining 11 brothers and sisters … became one of the top distance runners in the state as well as the nation over his career, twice competing for Team USA in international races … ran at the 2013 World Junior Cross Country Championships in Poland, finishing 42nd overall to help the U.S. finish fourth out of 17 teams … qualified for Worlds by finishing sixth at the 2013 U.S. Junior Cross Country Championships … also ran at the 2013 NACAC Junior XC Championships in Jamaica, finishing ninth overall and second among U.S. competitors … a three-time Foot Locker All-American, finishing in the top-15 at the national meet in 2010, 2011, and 2012 … as a senior in 2012, he finished 11th at Foot Locker Nationals, after taking fifth at West Regionals as the top Washington runner … took sixth at Foot Locker as a junior in 2011, after a fourth-place Regional run … was the top sophomore at the 2010 Foot Locker meet, finishing fourth overall and taking second at Regionals … named the 2012 Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year for Washington … a five-time Washington 4A state champion in cross country and track, winning the 2012 state cross country title and sweeping the 1,600m and 3,200m finals on the track in 2012 and 2013 … at the 2013 state meet, he set a PR in defending his 3,200m title in 8:54.48, a time that ranked 15th nationally … set his 1,600m PR as a junior, winning the state title in 4:09.71 … also was second at state in the 3,200m as just a freshman, and was fifth as a sophomore … after runner-up finishes as a sophomore and junior, he won his first state cross country title as a senior in 2012, capping an undefeated season with a win in 15:02, winning by 14 seconds … was eighth at the state XC meet as just a freshman in 2009 … ranked the 14th-best cross country athlete nationally by Running Times at the end of 2012 … graduated with a 3.4 GPA.
