SEATTLE - The No. 5 Oregon State baseball team avoided a series sweep Sunday at Husky Ballpark as starter Ben Wetzler pitched a four-hit shutout to beat Washington, 8-0.
Oregon State improved to 30-8 overall and 11-4 in the Pac-12 with the win. Washington (11-25, 5-9 Pac-12) swept a doubleheader Saturday.
Wetzler (3-1) went the distance for the win, allowing four singles and one walk while striking out six.
The Beavers, looking to rebound for their first back-to-back losses of the season, got started quick Sunday. Max Gordon opened the game with a double into the left-field corner and Tyler Smith followed by lining a double down the third-base line to drive in Gordon. After an out, Dylan Davis doubled off the wall in right to make it 2-0.
After a Danny Hayes single put runners at the corners, Ryan Barnes singled to drive in Davis. Then, after a walk loaded the bases, Andy Peterson lined a single to right, plating two more to make it a 5-0 Beavers lead.
In the second, Davis hit a two-out solo homer to left-center, increasing OSU's lead to 6-0. In the fifth, the Beavers added two more as Davis walked and scored on a double from Hayes, who scored on another two-bagger from Kavin Keyes.
In the meantime, Wetzler was able to quiet the Husky bats, which had rapped 26 hits in Saturday's doubleheader. The Huskies were held hitless until the fifth when freshman Braden Bishop lined a clean single to center.
Husky starter Troy Rallings and Will Ballowe each made their Husky Ballpark debut. Rallings pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Ballowe worked the eighth and ninth, also allowing one hit.
The Huskies head to Gonzaga for a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday in Spokane before returning home to face California in a three-game series next weekend at Husky Ballpark.
