June 5-8 at Oregon's Hayward Field
EUGENE, Ore. - The javelin throwers have to wait all through indoor track to compete, so its only fitting that they were the last ones to compete for the Huskies this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field. However, it was a tough day for seniors Joe Zimmerman and Jimmy Brookman, and freshman Carson Fuller as they were unable to add points to Washington's total as the season came to a close.
The Husky men placed 28th overall with eight points, all from Jeremy Taiwo's runner-up decathlon finish. The UW women wound up 29th with nine points, those coming from Megan Goethals, who was fourth in the 10,000m and fifth in the 5,000m. The Kansas women took the team title and the Texas A&M and Florida men tied for the men's team title.
It was the third NCAA appearance for Zimmerman, the second for Brookman, and the first for Fuller. In the first flight, Fuller was looking to build on the huge PR he threw at West Prelims two weeks back, but had just one fair throw today, at 202-5, and he would finish 22nd.
Brookman and Zimmerman both had their best throws of the day on their third and final attempts, but neither were close to their season-bests. Brookman checked in with a 214-4 toss to finish 16th overall, which should earn him All-America Second Team honors for the second year in a row. Zimmerman, the Pac-12 runner-up this year and a four-time Pac-12 scorer, threw just 210-3 and finished 17th. Zimmerman and Brookman finish their careers ranked third and eighth on the Husky top-10 lists.
