NO. 17 CAL 194.125
UC DAVIS 193.625
SEATTLE - That's more like it. The GymDawgs picked up a huge win in their 2013 home opener Friday night with a 194.800 to defeat Pac-12 foe No. 17 Cal (194.125), UC Davis (193.625) and Illinois-Chicago (191.350).
"I expected us to come out this way tonight," said head coach Joanne Bowers. "I was really proud of the team. We competed better today. If we keep getting a little bit better we are going to peak at the end of the season when we want too."
Senior Lauren Rogers (Plains, Pa.) led the way winning the all-around with a 39.025. She also took the vault title with a 9.850 and finished tied for third on bars with teammate Jackie McCartin with a 9.800.
"It felt really good to win the all-around because I haven't been in the floor lineup lately with an injury," said Rogers. "It just felt really good to get back out there because floor is my favorite event."
McCartin (West Covina, Calif.) took an individual title of her own, winning the beam with a 9.775. Three Huskies finished tied for second just behind her with a 9.750 in McKenzie Fechter, Aliza Vaccher.
Fellow senior and co-captain with Rogers, Paige Bixler (Rowlett, Texas) won the floor with a 9.825, just off of her career-best of 9.850 from 2011.
The Huskies led all teams with a 48.850 on bars and a 48.700 on beam. It all started for the GymDawgs though on vault with an impressive 48.975 where Vaccher, Northey and Rogers all hit 9.825 or higher.
Senior Phoebe Tham (North Vancouver, B.C.) made the bars lineup for the first time on the season scoring a 9.725. Senior Megan Whitney (Mesa, Ariz.) helped add to the great vault score with a season-best 9.775.
The Huskies are back on the road next week at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
