No. 18 Washington 10, Nebraska-Omaha 2(5)
FORT COLLINS, COLO. - With two more wins in the Colorado State Classic the No. 18/18 UW softball team took the tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend. The Huskies are 14-5 on the year and riding a nine-game win streak.
"The trip to Colorado was successful in several ways," said head coach Heather Tarr. "We played four great teams and had a chance to play in higher altitude which will prepare us for Pac-12 play at Utah. We competed very well at the plate and found a way to win games in a variety of ways."
Game One - No. 18 Washington 10, Nebraska-Omaha 2 (5 innings)
In the first-ever meeting between Washington and UNO, the Huskies took the game in five innings, 10-2, with runs in each of the first four innings.
The Husky offense was on fire, racking up 14 hits with junior Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) leading the way with three hit and two RBI. Fellow junior Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) was impressive as well with a team-high five RBI, two hits, two runs and two walks. Her hits included a double and a home run.
Washington scored three times in the top of the first and UNO put up two in the bottom of the inning. From the second inning on, it was all Huskies as the UW put up four in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth.
Sophomore Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start in the circle and allowed two runs, both unearned, and struck out seven in 2.2 innings.
Junior Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) got her first of two wins on the day improving to 5-2 on the season. She allowed just one hit and had four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
It was just the second loss of the season for UNO which falls to 17-2 on the year.
Game Two - No. 18 Washington 6, Colorado State 3
The host Rams gave the Huskies a run for their money in a tight game to close out the tournament Sunday afternoon.
Colorado State took an early 2-0 lead after two innings before the UW rallied for three in the third. The Rams tied the contest in the fifth at 3-3. Once again, the Huskies scored after their opponents to put the pressure on and to take the lead for good in the sixth with three more runs.
The Huskies had nine hits, led by Hayward, Wright and freshman Missy Taukeiaho (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) with two each. Wright and sophomore Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) each had home runs in the game.
Inglesby got the win while pitching 3.0 perfect innings with six strikeouts. Junior Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got the start and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings.
Sophomore Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) scored the winning run in the sixth on the Souza home run after reaching on a fielder's choice.
The Huskies play their 2013 home opener on March 6 at 5 p.m. vs. Ohio. The game was just recently added to the schedule and because of that, will be free to all fans.
