ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The Washington men's golf team shot 297 (+9) in the opening round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship on Friday and are tied for sixth in the 15-team field at The Golf Club of Georgia.

The third-ranked Huskies are tied with three other teams and sit eight strokes behind the leaders. USC grabbed the first round lead by shooting 1-over 289.

Washington welcomed back Chris Williams to the lineup, but the All-American and current No. 1 ranked amateur in the world was not his usual self. Williams, who missed the Pac-12 Preview while representing the United States in the World Amateur Golf Championships, is battling an illness and struggled to shoot 4-over 76 at the 7,106-yard Lakeside Course. His score was the highest of the Huskies' four counting scores and leaves him tied for 34th entering Saturday's second round.

Leading the way for Washington in day one was junior Trevor Simsby. The California shot even par 72 and is tied for 12th in the 79-player field. He made the turn at 2 under, but bogeyed 10 and 11 to end up where he ultimately finished.

"Trevor had a nice round," Coach Matt Thurmond said of Simsby, coming off the individual victory at the Pac-12 Preview. "He was just really solid all day."

Talor Gooch of Oklahoma State shot 4-under 68 to lead the tournament. He is one shot ahead of Iowa's Steve Ihm and Auburn's Michael Johnson.

Second among Huskies was All-American Cheng-Tsung Pan. He was consistent for much of the day until a double-bogey on the par 4 14th hole came up and bit him. Pan finished the round at 2 over and is tied for 22nd.

Charlie Hughes was on track to have an excellent round and was 1 over through 17 holes before a triple-bogey 8 on the final hole blemished his scorecard. He finds himself tied for 39th.

Freshman Tyler Salsbury shot 87 and is 79th.

"It was not a good day for us, but fortunately we are not that far out of it," said Thurmond. "Hopefully tomorrow we'll come out rejuvenated, refreshed and ready to go."

The Huskies start teeing off at 8:30 a.m. PT on Saturday. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
