BEAUMONT, Texas - Junior starting pitcher Austin Voth struck out 14, shutting out Lamar through the first seven and two-thirds innings as the Washington baseball team opened a four-game series at Vincent-Beck Stadium with an 8-2 victory Friday.

Voth, a right-hander from Kentwood High, improved to 1-1 with the victory. He struck out two Cardinal batters in each of the first six innings (as well as in the eighth) and gave up just one walk along with three singles and two doubles. No Lamar baserunner advanced beyond second base until the eighth, when a two-out double scored the first two runs of the game for Lamar.

UW first baseman Trevor Mitsui led the Husky offense, going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Right fielder Jayce Ray and second baseman Robert Pehl added three hits apiece.

Washington (2-3) got started with a two-out rally in the top of the first as five straight Huskies singled after the first two outs were recorded. With two down and none on, back-to-back singles from Ray and Pehl put runners at first and second for Mitsui, whose single drove in Ray. Designated hitter Austin Rei kept the rally alive with a single, plating Mitsui to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies stretched their lead in the third. Ray singled to begin the inning and, after Pehl doubled to put two aboard, a Mitsui groundout brought Ray home. Pehl scored on a wild pitch to increase the UW lead to 5-0. In the third, Ray singled and scored on a two-out single from Pehl to make it 6-0.

In the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases on two hit batters and a single before a two-out, bases-loaded single from Mitsui upped the lead to 7-0. In the seventh, Andrew Ely singled and scored on a double from Ty Afenir to make it 8-0.

Voth had allowed no walks and just three hits - all singles - entering the eighth inning before Lamar, trailing by eight, finally broke through. After a double and a walk, a two-out double from Jude Vidrine drove in two to get the Cardinals on the board. UW reliever Trevor Dunlap took over for Voth after the Vidrine double and closed out the victory.

Starter Jonathan Dziedzic (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cardinals (4-2), allowing six runs on 10 hits over four innings.

The Huskies were originally meant to be a part of a three-team tournament at Lamar, but Creighton's travel plans were dashed by the winter storm in the Midwest, leading the Cardinals and Huskies agreeing to a four-game series. Saturday, the series continues with 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
