PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The Husky men's golf team dropped a pair of matches on Monday in the first day of action of the Stanford Classic at Cypress Point Golf Club.

Washington fell 10-2 vs. Stanford in their opening match of four ball "best ball". The team of Chris Williams and Trevor Simsby earned 1 point for winning the front nine, while the pairs of Charlie Hughes & Larry Iverson and Gerrit Chambers & Tyler Salsbury each racked up 1/2 point for splitting the front nine.

In the consolation bracket, the Huskies fell 10-2 to USC in alternating shot foursomes. Hughes and Iverson were the only Huskies to score, racking up a half point for splitting the front and back and an additional point for tying the 18 hole match.

Washington will face Michigan in singles matches tomorrow.

The Huskies are among eight teams competing in the match-play formatted tournament, Monday and Tuesday.

The Classic features host Stanford, Washington, USC, UCLA, Duke, Georgia, Michigan and Texas for a unique Ryder Cup match-play format. The first round was four-ball play, followed by foursomes and finally singles matches.

Each squad is represented by six players competing in both winners' and losers' brackets to ensure that each team plays both days.
