Box Score

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team broke out the bats, collecting 16 hits in an 8-3 win over USC Sunday at Husky Ballpark. Three different Huskies - Joe Meggs, Trevor Mitsui and Ryan Wiggins - each contributed three hits.

The victory gave the Huskies (2-4 in the Pac-12, 6-16 overall) a two-games-to-one series win over the Trojans, who fell to 2-4 and 9-15.

Wiggins, the Huskies' catcher from West Seattle High, finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. Meggs was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Mitsui was 3-for-5 with one run scored and two batted in.

Husky reliever Zach Wright (1-2) earned the victory, holding the Trojans scoreless on two hits over three innings. Tyler Kane pitched the final three innings to pick up his second straight save and fourth of the season.

USC scored a run in the first to open the scoring. Greg Zebrack was hit by a full-count pitch to begin the game. He eventually scored on a two-out single from James Roberts to give the Trojans the 1-0 lead.

The Huskies broke through in the third. After two outs, the UW loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Mitsui then lined a single off of the pitcher's glove to tie the score at 1-1. Wiggins followed with another single that got a piece of the pitcher's mitt, scoring another. Will Sparks then singled to center to drive in a third, giving Washington a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Trojans struck back. Singles from James Roberts and Jake Hernandez opened the inning and Roberts came into score on a pair of wild pitches. After a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out, the Huskies hung on to the lead when Wright induced an inning-ending double play to keep it a 3-2 UW lead.

In the sixth, the Huskies had another rally like the one in the third, though with just one out this time. After an out, Ty Afenir singled and Jayce Ray walked before a Meggs single drove in a run. A hit batter loaded the bases and singles from Mitsui and Wiggins drove in one and two runs, respectively, stretching the Husky lead to 7-2. Andrew Ely singled home Mitsui to end the inning with the score at 8-2.

USC starter Kyle Twomey (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits over five innings. Roberts led the Trojans hitter, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. In the eighth, Roberts doubled and scored on an AJ Ramirez single to post the Trojans' third run.

The Huskies head out on the road for their next 11 games, beginning next Thursday through Saturday, when the UW visits Oregon for a three-game, Pac-12 series in Eugene.
