Washington Assistant AD for Events and Facilities Dan Gaston will update GoHuskies.com readers weekly on the progress made at Husky Ballpark. The baseball season starts on Friday, Feb. 14, but UW will not play at its renovated stadium until Friday, March 21. Following is a recap of what progress has been made over the past week.
There are a couple big things that are going on right now, starting from the field and working the way to the stadium.
The field turf was only about 85% of the way complete entering the week. We did not have the foul territory behind home plate and down the lines completed, so workers are pulling that all together right now. They started late last week grading everything and this week they started putting the turf down. They will sew in “Husky Ballpark” and put a “W” behind home plate over the next week.
The bleacher system is almost halfway installed, so they’re making a lot of progress in the seating areas. We should start seeing more and more of the planks and metal; they’re about halfway done with the structural pieces as of today. Workers will go back and lay the footboards and the back rests on the risers, so they’re moving along nicely on that.
The press level and suite level up top is all enclosed now. They’re putting metal siding on the back and just getting ready to start painting.
One of the more noticeable changes was the additions of the staircases from the ground to the upper concourses. There are four massive staircases that came in and were installed.
All the steel came in today for the ticket office, so workers dug and brought all the conduits out for the building. Workers are putting down the foam to make the floating foundation and they’re getting ready to pour that in the next couple of days.
Late last week they started doing the concrete work on the outside and you are starting to see some of the landscape work. The whole sidewalk along Walla Walla Drive will be replaced with concrete. There will be no asphalt when all is said and done.
The workers are still plugging along with all the cabling too, so a lot has happened in the last week.
